How to play

Use WASD or arrow keys to thrust your ship. Spacebar fires the cannon. Left and right rotate the craft. Hold thrust briefly to coast. Shoot asteroids to break them; collect ore for points. A single direct hit ends the run. The longer you survive, the faster the drift becomes.

Game features

  • Inertial ship movement with no friction
  • Procedurally generated asteroid fields, no two runs identical
  • Eight unlockable ship variants with different mass and thrust
  • Local high-score table with run-export option
  • Plays at 60fps on older hardware
  • Mobile touch controls with tilt-aim option

Editor review

Vector Drift is the Asteroids clone you have already played but slightly polished. The 1979 Atari original is still the canonical version of this format and most clones either over-engineer it or under-deliver. Vector Drift sits in the middle, which is honestly where most clones in this genre live.

What works is the ship physics. The inertia model is correct: thrust adds velocity, releasing thrust does nothing (no friction), and you have to actively decelerate by thrusting in the opposite direction. This is the part that makes Asteroids hard for newcomers and rewarding for veterans, and Vector Drift respects it.

The eight ship variants are mostly cosmetic. Some are slightly faster, some are slightly more nimble. None of them change the gameplay enough to justify learning a different muscle memory. I stuck with the default ship for the whole review session.

Tested it on the Cross-City Line on my morning commute. Mobile touch works adequately but the tilt-aim option is too floppy to use seriously on a train. Desktop with keyboard is where this game lives.

Where it falls short is the visual presentation. The vector aesthetic is plain in a way that 1979 was forgiven for but 2026 should not be. Theme Hospital had more visual personality on hardware that was three orders of magnitude less powerful. Three-and-a-half stars. Functional Asteroids tribute that does not quite earn the fourth.
