Editor review

Magnet Maze is a puzzle-arcade hybrid where you move a magnetic ball through fixed levels using charged walls and switches to attract or repel the ball. The format is reminiscent of Mr. Bullet (puzzle-shooter, 2018) crossed with classic ball-rolling games like Marble Madness (1984). The mix works better than I expected.

What works is the polarity-switching mechanic. Each level has fixed magnetic poles at known positions; you control the ball polarity, which determines whether the poles pull you toward them or push you away. Switching polarity mid-roll lets you slingshot around poles in ways that pure-physics ball games cannot do. The puzzle is figuring out the polarity sequence that completes the level.

Sixty levels across four themed sets. The early levels teach single-pole switching. Mid-campaign introduces multiple poles in the same room. Late campaign adds moving poles and timed polarity windows. The progression is paced correctly.

Tested over five commute sessions on the Cross-City Line. Mobile touch with tap-to-switch-polarity works beautifully because the input is binary and timing-based. Desktop with spacebar to switch is equally comfortable, and gamepad with bumper to switch rounds out the input options. All three inputs feel correct, which is rare for browser games.

Where the game falls just short of four stars is the visual presentation. The magnetic-field lines could be rendered more legibly. As-is, you sometimes have to trial-and-error to figure out which way a pole will push you, when a clearer visual cue would let you plan ahead.

Three-and-a-half stars. Strong puzzle-arcade hybrid that earns its place in the catalogue. Worth playing for the polarity mechanic alone, with the caveat that the visual feedback could be better.
