Editor review

Neon Grand Prix is a synthwave-themed racer in the F-Zero / Wipeout lineage. Hovercraft physics with boost pads and track barriers that throw you off. The aesthetic is heavy-handed but the racing underneath is solid.

What works is the boost-pad timing. Boost pads on the track give you a speed burst if you hit them, but they also burn fuel. Fuel pickups balance the equation. This creates a strategic-cornering layer where you decide whether to push boost into a corner you might not make or save it for the straight. F-Zero (1990) used this format and Neon Grand Prix respects it.

Sixteen tracks across four cup tournaments. Each cup escalates difficulty in tight increments. The fourth cup introduces sections with no fuel pickups, forcing tight boost management. The escalation respects the player.

Tested with gamepad mostly. Touch and keyboard inputs are supported but feel limp compared to gamepad. The hovercraft control model rewards smooth analog inputs that digital steering cannot match.

Where the design works is the rivals system. AI rivals have personalities. The same AI car shows up across tracks, learning from your driving and adapting its line. By the third cup I was racing specific named AI rivals rather than generic competition. This is a smart retention mechanic.

Where I would push back is the soundtrack volume balancing. The synthwave music is good but is mixed too loud over the engine sounds. Adjusting the music slider in settings helps, but defaults should be better balanced out of the box.

Four stars. Strong synthwave racer with F-Zero discipline and clever rivals system. Recommended for hovercraft-racing fans and Wipeout veterans.
