Editor review
Orbit Strike is a circular shooter where your ship orbits a central core and you fire outward at enemies approaching from all sides. The format is reminiscent of arcade-era classics like Tempest (1981) but on a hex-radial grid rather than Tempest stretched tube. The premise is interesting; the execution is mid.
What works is the radial movement. You rotate around the core in either direction, which gives you escape options on both sides of incoming threats. Combined with the rear-fire option (a button that fires backward as you rotate forward), this creates more tactical depth than the visual presentation suggests at first.
Enemy variety is where the game starts to thin out. Eight enemy types, but four of them are slight variations on the same drone behaviour. Only the snake and the splitter types require distinct strategies; once you have figured out the radial-rotate-and-shoot pattern, most other threats blur together.
Tested on the Cross-City Line on my afternoon return commute. The radial controls suit gamepad input best, with the left stick for rotation and right stick for fire direction. Mobile touch and keyboard both work but feel less natural for this rotation-heavy format.
Boss fights at every ten waves are the highlight. Each boss introduces a unique attack pattern such as a rotating laser or an expanding ring that asks you to think about positioning relative to the core. These are the moments where the format gets out of its own way and just becomes a good arena shooter.
Three-and-a-half stars. Solid radial shooter with thin enemy roster. Worth playing for the boss fights and if you have a gamepad.
