Editor review

Quick Hop is a basic single-button jump game. Tap to jump, time the jump to clear obstacles, last as long as possible before mistiming a jump and ending the run. The format has been done a hundred times and Quick Hop adds nothing to it.

The obstacle patterns are randomly arranged from a small set of templates, which means the game has variation but not strategy. You cannot learn a level layout because there is no fixed layout. You just react to whatever comes. After fifteen minutes of play I had seen every obstacle type and most pattern combinations.

What does not work is the difficulty progression. The game speeds up over time, which is fine, but the speed-up rate is steep enough that runs end abruptly rather than with the smooth difficulty-curve push that the format thrives on. Canabalt (2009) had a much smoother acceleration that let runs build to dramatic finishes. Quick Hop just slams you into a wall.

Tested over two morning commutes on the Cross-City Line and stopped before the third because there was nothing more to discover. Mobile touch and keyboard both work fine. The game is mechanically functional.

Where I would push back is the cosmetic-unlock layer, which is built around in-game currency you earn slowly across runs. The unlocks are visual reskins of the character with no gameplay effect. This is the kind of progression layer that exists because the genre expects it, not because the game needs it.

Two-and-a-half stars. Functional one-button jump game that has been done better elsewhere. Skippable unless one-button jump games are specifically what you are looking for.
