Editor review
Star Runner X is an auto-running shooter where your character runs forward continuously and you control the jump and the fire direction. Auto-runners with shooting have been a small subgenre since Jetpack Joyride (2011) and the format has aged reasonably well. Star Runner X executes the format competently without adding anything new.
The fire mechanic is the differentiating bit. Eight-direction aim using mouse or right stick, while the character keeps running. This means you can shoot backwards at enemies you have already passed, which sounds useful but in practice is rarely needed because forward-spawning enemies handle most of the threat budget.
What works is the jump physics. The character has variable jump height (hold for higher, release for shorter) and a mid-air air-jump that resets on ground touch. The platforming feels precise and responsive, which matters because the auto-run format gives you no time to recover from input mistakes.
Tested on six commute sessions on the Cross-City Line. Mobile touch has separate jump and fire buttons that take up too much screen real estate, leaving too little for the actual game. Desktop with keyboard-and-mouse is better. Gamepad with twin-stick is best, with right stick for aim and bumper for jump.
Where the game falls flat is the level design. Twelve levels across three biomes (forest and desert, plus a space finale) and the levels recycle the same obstacle patterns with cosmetic reskins. By the third biome the layouts felt familiar in a tired way rather than in a comforting way. Roller Coaster Tycoon (different genre, similar level-recycling problem in its second decade) suffered the same issue.
Three stars. Competent auto-runner-shooter that does not justify itself past a single playthrough. Fine for a short commute, easy to forget.
