Editor review
Ice Race is a racing arcade specifically for ice and snow surfaces. No dry tarmac. Every track is on either ice or packed snow, sometimes on partly cleared road. Studded tires are standard equipment. The format is committed to a single surface family and works the depth out of it.
What works is the surface granularity. Grip varies cell-by-cell. A patch of black ice can trigger a spin even on a straight section. Anticipating low-grip patches becomes a skill, and skilled players read the road surface as closely as the corners.
Fifteen tracks across three Nordic themes. Frozen lake racing, snow rally stages, and studded-tire circuit racing on cleared tracks all appear across the campaign. The variety of ice-and-snow conditions keeps the format from feeling samey.
Tested on weekend gamepad sessions. Touch and keyboard inputs are technically supported but feel completely wrong for this format. Smooth analog steering is mandatory.
Where the design earns its three-and-a-half is the studded-tire rule modelling. Studded tires grip on ice but suffer on cleared tarmac sections. The game tracks which tire you have on and adjusts grip accordingly. This is detail-level realism that arcade racers rarely include.
Where I would push back is the absence of tire-temperature modelling. Studded tires perform differently at -30C versus -5C, and the game treats temperature as a flat constant. This is a small thing but matters for the player who cares enough about ice racing to seek out a niche game.
Three-and-a-half stars. Strong ice-and-snow specialist racer with disciplined surface modelling. Limited by absence of temperature physics and small track roster.
