Editor review

Icicle Drop is a vertical-descent platformer set in ice caves. Your character falls slowly through ice-cave passages; icicles hang from the ceiling and break off if you trigger them. Twenty stages.

What works is the descent mechanic. The character falls at a slow controllable rate. Tap left or right to adjust trajectory. The falling-not-jumping format is unusual for a platformer and the inversion takes a few stages to internalise.

Twenty stages across three ice-cave themes. Crystal caves feature reflective surfaces and additional visual complexity. Frozen waterfall sections add moving water hazards, while deep cave sections have limited visibility.

Tested over four Cross-City Line train sessions. Touch works fine because tap-to-steer maps directly to touch. Mouse-drag also works. Keyboard is supported but feels less natural for the falling motion.

Where the design earns its rating is the icicle-trigger mechanic. Some icicles are pre-cracked and visibly unstable. Passing close to these triggers them to break and fall onto the path below. Reading the icicle state is the skill the format depends on.

Where I would push back is the absence of difficulty options. The icicle-trigger mechanic creates spike-difficulty moments that may frustrate casual players. A casual mode with safer icicle behaviour would have broadened the audience.

Three-and-a-half stars. Solid vertical-descent platformer with thoughtful icicle-trigger mechanic. Worth playing for the format inversion.
