Editor review

Pixel Quest Mini is a small platformer adventure with charming pixel art and a complete narrative arc. Twenty stages across four themed zones. The game tells a small story about a knight retrieving lost gems for a kingdom. It is short, it is charming, and it is honest about what it is.

What works is the story-telling restraint. Most browser platformers either skip narrative entirely or shoehorn in unnecessary lore. Pixel Quest Mini does the small story right. Each zone has a brief intro card. Each boss has a few lines of dialogue. The whole campaign takes about ninety minutes and earns its narrative weight.

Twenty stages across four zones (forest, ice cavern, desert tomb, throne tower). Each zone has five stages plus a boss. The pixel art is hand-drawn with character. The knight has a recognisable silhouette and the enemies are not generic.

Tested over four Cross-City Line commute sessions on the train. The format suits commute play; each stage takes about three to five minutes, which fits a single train stop. Mobile touch with on-screen buttons works fine. Keyboard arrow keys plus space for jump is the comfortable desktop input.

Where the design earns its four stars is the boss design. Each boss has a unique pattern with three phases. Reading the pattern is the puzzle; executing the dodges is the skill. The bosses are the highlight of the campaign and worth the playthrough on their own.

Where I would push back is the late-game stage padding. Stages thirteen through twenty feel longer than they need to be without adding new challenges. Trimming each of these by thirty seconds would have tightened the campaign considerably.

Four stars. Strong small-scope platformer with hand-drawn pixel art and well-designed bosses. Recommended for a single complete playthrough on a commute or two.
