Editor review

Metroid Mini is a small-scope metroidvania with the connected-map structure and ability-gated progression that defines the genre. Three hour campaign across one interconnected map. Five abilities gate progression. The format is the genre done at modest scale.

What works is the map design. The map is one large connected environment rather than separate levels. Each ability you unlock opens new routes through already-explored areas. The exploration loop is what makes metroidvanias work, and Metroid Mini honours that loop with a deliberately small but well-designed map.

Five abilities gate progression: double-jump, dash, wall-cling, charge-shot, ground-pound. Each ability is found in a specific zone, and the placement teaches the player where to go next without explicit objective markers. This is the right level of trust to put in the player.

Tested over six Barcelona Sants commute sessions plus a couple of weekend bench sessions. Keyboard with arrow keys is the comfortable input. Gamepad d-pad works just as well. Touch is supported but the metroidvania format benefits from quick combat inputs that touch cannot reliably provide.

Where the design earns its four stars is the ability-discovery cadence. Every two-to-three rooms reveals a new shortcut back to a previous area. The dopamine of discovery is constant without being overwhelming. This is metroidvania pacing done right.

Where I would push back is the combat. Combat is functional but feels grafted on. The enemies are placeholder threats rather than challenges. The boss fights are interesting but rare. A more developed combat system would have pushed Metroid Mini to four-and-a-half.

Four stars. Strong small-scope metroidvania with disciplined map design and ability-discovery cadence. Recommended for genre fans who want a short complete experience rather than a sprawling campaign.
