Editor review
V8 Roar is a muscle-car arcade racer dedicated to the American V8 ecosystem. Eight cars from the muscle-car era. Eight tracks themed around American highways and tracks. The format is a love letter to Detroit and the execution earns its four stars.
What works is the engine audio. Each car has a unique V8 sound, recorded accurately and mixed to convey the personality of each engine. The 426 hemi has a different snarl than the 460 big block. This audio attention is rare in browser racers and lifts the entire experience.
Weight transfer in muscle cars is a key handling characteristic, and V8 Roar models it well. Hard acceleration shifts weight back, lifting the front and reducing steering authority. Hard braking shifts weight forward, locking the rear and risking spin. The model is simplified compared to a sim but is true to the muscle-car character.
The cars cover three muscle-era variants. Pre-1970 originals with stock engines and post-1970 modified street cars sit alongside modern restomod conversions. Each era handles distinctly because the chassis and engine combinations differ.
Tested with gamepad mostly. Touch and keyboard are usable but the format benefits from analog throttle. Muscle cars demand precise throttle work, and binary inputs cannot deliver it.
Where the design earns its rating is the highway-cruise mode. Beyond the track racing, the game offers a free-drive mode through scenic American highways with classic rock streaming on a virtual radio. This is a meditative second mode that complements the high-energy racing.
Where I would push back is the absence of custom paint schemes. Muscle car culture is heavily about personalisation, and V8 Roar does not let you change paint schemes or stripes. A simple paint editor would have addressed this missing piece.
Four stars. Strong American-muscle racer with excellent audio and thoughtful era splits. Recommended for racing fans who appreciate the muscle-car heritage.
