What works is the co-op coordination requirement. Each player class has different abilities (medic, soldier, engineer, scout). Teams that coordinate their abilities clear waves; uncoordinated teams die.

Tested with Mumbai online friends across three weekend sessions. The co-op format is naturally social and works well for friend groups. Random matchmaking is functional but less satisfying than coordinated friend play.
Where the design earns its rating is the class-balance work. Each class has counter-roles. Removing one class type significantly weakens the team. Class coordination is the meta.
Where I would push back is the absence of asynchronous matchmaking. Real-time only means you need available friends or willing strangers. Async-co-op-zombies would have widened the audience.
