Editor review
Void Volley is a horizontal space shooter in the R-Type lineage with charged-shot mechanics and limited shield resources. Twenty levels with three difficulty modes. The format is classical scrolling shoot-em-up done at modest scale.
What works is the charge-shot system. Holding the fire button charges a beam weapon; releasing fires. Charge time correlates with shot strength. Quick taps fire weak shots rapidly; long charges fire one heavy shot. The decision between fast-weak and slow-strong is the depth.
Twenty levels across three difficulty modes. Normal teaches the format. Hard and expert modes ramp up difficulty with faster enemies and tighter bullet patterns.
Tested with keyboard and gamepad. Keyboard arrow keys plus z/x is the precision input. Gamepad d-pad works. Touch is supported but loses precision in dense bullet patterns.
Where the design earns its rating is the boss design. Each level ends with a boss that has a unique attack pattern. Reading the pattern is the challenge, and bosses are the highlight of each level.
Where I would push back is the difficulty curve. Normal mode is too easy and expert mode is too hard, with hard mode being the only viable middle ground. A custom-difficulty option would have served the audience better.
Three-and-a-half stars. Solid horizontal shoot-em-up with classical charge-shot mechanics. Limited by short campaign and binary difficulty design.
